Any device to Modbus
Equipment and software that speak only Modbus can read data that came from anywhere. The Gateway becomes a Modbus slave: every routed tag is served as holding or input registers for numbers and coils or discrete inputs for booleans, over TCP, RTU or ASCII. Read-only towards the plant: write function codes are refused.
Typical use case
An older SCADA, a panel or a PLC that only has a Modbus driver needs values from a Siemens or Allen-Bradley controller, or from a DNP3 or BACnet device. The gateway reads them natively and serves them as registers.

A register map you control
Fix where each tag is served, as holding:100 or the reference form 40101; unlisted tags are placed after the last mapped one. The assigned map is written beside the runtime's data for the integrator on the other side.
Numbers as you choose
float32, int16, int32 and the rest, with the byte order the master expects.
Quality, not stale numbers
A tag whose quality is not good is answered with exception 04, or with the last good value or zero when a master cannot cope with exceptions.
